“I certainly didn’t expect to see you here,” Chloe said, looking me up and down with open contempt. She wore an expensive silver gown and a diamond bracelet that seemed far beyond what a secretary could afford, while I stood in a plain black coat holding my daughter’s hand. When I told her we had come to surprise Dominic, Sophia proudly lifted the necklace and said, “Daddy’s going to wear it.” Chloe looked at the necklace, then laughed so cruelly that Sophia’s smile began to disappear.
“This event is for executives, VIP guests, and immediate family,” Chloe said. I told her I was Dominic’s immediate family, but she only folded her arms and said he was already upstairs with his wife and their son. She made sure several nearby guests heard every word, and she watched my face as if my humiliation were part of the evening’s entertainment. When I asked what she meant, she told me I was making everyone uncomfortable and should leave before security removed me.
Sophia tugged at my sleeve and asked the question that broke my heart. “Mommy, where’s Daddy?” She held the necklace against her chest as if she could protect it from the truth. I knelt, asked her to cover her ears, and stood again with a calm I did not feel. Then I pulled out my phone while Chloe smirked and asked whether I was calling someone to drive me home.
She had no idea who I was calling. Before I married Dominic, I was Vivienne Sterling, and I had hidden my family name because I wanted a man to love me without knowing what that name could do.
